CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Newspaper-publisher Lee Enterprises has appointed longtime newspaper executive John Pfeifer as the new publisher of the Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale.

Pfeifer succeeds Bob Williams, who this week was named publisher of The Daily Herald in Provo, Utah. Lee owns both newspapers.

Pfeifer rejoins the Lee group after about a year as vice president of sales development and training for GateHouse Media Inc.'s community publication division.

Pfeifer previously was publisher for Lee holdings in Twin Falls, Idaho; Elko, Nev.; DeKalb, Ill., and Rhinelander, Wis.

Pfeifer earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a master's of business administration degree from Wisconsin's Cardinal Stritch University. He and his wife, Karen, have three adult children.

One of his children graduated four years ago from Southern Illinois University.
