LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal prosecutors say they've reached a settlement with the city of Lomita over allegations its officials violated an anti-discrimination law when they denied an Islamic center permission to build a new mosque.
If approved by a district court judge, Friday's settlement would resolve the 2010 denial of the Islamic Center of the South Bay's request to replace its aging structures with a single building for its worshippers.
As part of the settlement, the city will consider a renewed application on an expedited schedule.
The city has also agreed to train leaders and employees who make land-use decisions on the requirements of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act.
Calls seeking comments from the city and the Islamic Center were not immediately returned.
