LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles schools reopen after winter break with tighter security in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The nation's second-largest school district reopens Monday with police and county sheriff's deputies planning extra patrols at campuses. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has said an officer will stop each day at the city's 600 public elementary and middle schools.

Beck says officers also will be expected to develop contacts with school officials and teachers.
