FREMONT, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California man has been charged with murder after crashing his car and killing a U.S. Marine who had just returned from Afghanistan.
Fremont police officer Alan Zambonin wrote in an affidavit that 23-year-old Alexander Yohn of Emeryville had refused offers of a ride after a night of drinking before causing the crash that killed 23-year-old Andrew Silva of Union City who was riding his motorcycle.
Silva was a Marine lance corporal with a wife and 2-year-old son who had returned from Afghanistan in February.
Alameda County prosecutors charged Yohn with murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run. He is being held without bail.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Yohn is a self-described heroin addict and alcoholic who has a previous drunken driving conviction in Minnesota.
