SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities have cited and fined a truck driver who lost his load of gravel and dirt and triggered a 22-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dave Gibson says nine people were checked for minor or moderate injuries after the Monday morning incident about 17 miles east of Sparks.

Gibson says 61-year-old truck driver Daniel Koski of Reno was pulling three trailers, including at least one "belly dump" trailer that opens along the bottom. One of the trailers lost its contents, although it's still unclear why.

Troopers say gravel and dirt spread over the two westbound lanes and caused vehicles to spin out and hit guardrails.

Gibson says Koski was cited for losing his load and faces a fine of more than $1,000.
