LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man convicted of killing two neighbors in his Los Angeles apartment building in 1982 has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

City News Service says 58-year-old Victor Alvarez was given two consecutive life sentences Monday.

Prosecutors say he stabbed and beat to death 67-year-old Cordelia Ferguson and 63-year-old Hazel Hughes, whose bodies were discovered in different apartments about 12 hours apart in August 1982.

Alvarez was arrested in 2009 in New York City after tests showed his DNA matched evidence from Hughes.

He was convicted in May of first-degree murder. Jurors also found that he sodomized Hughes and killed her during a burglary.

His attorney, who plans to appeal, argued during trial that the DNA evidence was old and degraded.
