NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a North Las Vegas man was hospitalized with minor injuries while a smoky fire gutted his house.

North Las Vegas fire officials say the homeowner was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas after firefighters were summoned about 2 p.m. to his single-story house near Lake Mead Boulevard and Pecos Road.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that firefighters fought heavy smoke and flames and were able to extinguish the fire within about 10 minutes.

The home was deemed a complete loss, with damage estimated at about $185,000.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.

The American Red Cross is helping the man and his family look for alternative housing.
