MARSYVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff's officials in Northern California say a man who was fatally wounded after exchanging gunfire with deputies was a suspect in three bank robberies and had been dubbed the "Man Bag Robber."

Yuba County Sheriff's officials identified the man on Wednesday to KCRA-TV as 43-year-old Christopher George Louk.

The incident began Tuesday afternoon after a sheriff's deputy spotted a man who matched Louk's description near two banks in Marysville. Marysville is about 40 miles north of Sacramento.

Sheriff's officials say Louk and the two deputies exchanged gunfire when Louk turned onto a dead-end road after a chase.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, though investigators are looking into whether his fatal wound was self-inflicted.

The FBI dubbed Louk the "Man Bag Robber" for a satchel authorities say he carried during robberies.
