LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man on an overpass has brought the hours-long shutdown of a major freeway, causing massive traffic backups through the east side of Los Angeles during Friday rush hour.

Los Angeles County sheriff's and fire departments say Interstate 5 in East LA was closed down shortly before 4 p.m. and it remained shut down in both directions more than three hours later.

Sheriff's officials say they are talking to the possibly suicidal man who is standing on a platform in front of a freeway sign.

Firefighters are inflating giant cushions on the freeway below him.

The closed section of I-5 is near major interchanges, and the overflow is affecting traffic on U.S. 101 and Interstate 710.
