PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A 21-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to murder in the beating death of an elderly relative who was discovered bleeding in a Glendale apartment last month.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/195JRPj ) the death marked the first homicide in Glendale since 2009.
James Sanchez was arraigned Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Authorities say a family member found 84-year-old Ruben Sanchez severely beaten in his apartment on Nov. 18. He later died at a hospital.
Family members say James Sanchez was not a blood relative of the deceased.
The newspaper says a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 13.
He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison if convicted.
