EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man who killed his ex-wife and confessed in an email has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.

U-T San Diego says Timothy Danielson was sentenced Friday.

Authorities say the 66-year-old Lakeside man shot Ming Qi several times with a rifle three years ago because she'd apparently begun a new relationship.

The two were divorced but living in the same house.

Authorities went to the home after a woman reported that her former brother-in-law had sent an email claiming he'd killed his ex-wife and was trying to kill himself.

In a letter read during sentencing, Danielson apologized to his ex-wife's adult son, expressed remorse and said what happened was a suicide that went "horribly wrong."
