SEAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The mailbox was once the link to the outside world for older people.

But many residents of Leisure World, a retirement village in California, say they don't care about losing Saturday mail delivery.

Now there's email for letter-writing and Facebook for keeping in touch with friends and relatives. And there's snail mail for ... Well, for what, really?

Some people might remember the days of waiting anxiously for the Sears catalog to land in their mailbox.

But those days died long before the U.S. Postal Service announcement this week that it plans to kill Saturday deliveries except for packages.

Lynette Waltner recalls a time when her grandmother waited excitedly at the mailbox for her Lane Bryant catalog.

But the 77-year-old Waltner says she prefers to spend Saturdays golfing.
