SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Authorities in Northern California are still searching for the robber who fatally shot a Massachusetts man hiking on a remote trail.
Tehama County Sheriff's Sgt. Andy Houghtby said Sunday that investigators are looking for clues about the gunman who killed 69-year-old Francis "Pat" Gregory on Friday on a trail north of Red Bluff, which is about 120 miles north of Sacramento.
The robber shot Gregory and a 76-year-old California man after taking their money and belongings. Gregory died at the scene, and his unidentified hiking partner remains hospitalized with critical injuries.
Gregory had been on vacation with his wife.
Meanwhile, in Gregory's hometown of West Tisbury in Martha's Vineyard, friends are mourning his death. Flags flew at half-staff Sunday to remember Gregory, who was the longtime moderator during town meetings.
