LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a mother and child have been found dead after a fire in a Los Angeles garage — raising to 11 the number of fire-related deaths in the city this year.
Firefighters went to east 50th Street shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and found a garage — which had been converted to living space — in flames.
The blaze was doused in less than 10 minutes.
Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says crews found a 2-year-old girl in the garage. Paramedics tried to save her but she was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The girl's mother also was inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
There have been 11 fire-related deaths in Los Angeles this year, including several children. Authorities say many of their homes lacked smoke alarms.
