LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man suspected of being the driver who killed a Los Angeles policeman and seriously injured another in a crash has pleaded not guilty to murder.

The Daily Breeze reports 20-year-old Mynor Varela was arraigned Wednesday on several charges including murder, vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. He was arrested Tuesday and remains jailed without bail.

Police believe that Varela was behind the wheel of an SUV that crashed into a police cruiser Saturday in the Harbor City area. The patrol car was broadsided as it made a U-turn to follow a speeding car.

The crash killed 32-year-old Officer Roberto Sanchez. His partner, Richard Medina, received a broken jaw and other injuries.

If convicted, Varela could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
