CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a 73-year-old inmate who's been in prison for nearly four decades has died after a prolonged illness.

Nevada Department of Corrections officials say Lawrence Schultz died Monday at the Regional Medical Facility at the Nevada Correctional Center.

Schultz had been in prison since 1978 after being convicted of first-degree murder in Clark County. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

An autopsy is planned.
