LOS ANGELES (AP) — There's a new contract for harbor clerks who staged an eight-day strike in November, crippling the nation's largest port complex and tying up billions in cargo.
A joint statement obtained by the Los Angeles Times Thursday says employers and members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit had ratified agreements reached on Dec. 4.
It looked like the pact would be ratified then, but clerks balked and turned it down.
The statement did not say what happened then or what turned it around.
The strike shut down 10 of the ports' 14 terminals and kept about $760 million a day in cargo from being delivered. Ten thousand longshoremen refused to cross picket lines.
The clerks had been without a contract for two years.
