FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) — A Mendocino County foster father is facing charges in the death of a five-month-old girl who died after suffering skull fractures.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/YVI8Zw ) Wilson Lee Tubbs III was arrested Monday on suspicion of causing serious injury to an infant resulting in death.

The newspaper says Mendocino Coast Hospital officials called police on Dec. 2 after Tubbs had taken the girl to the facility when she stopped breathing.

The 38-year-old Tubbs said the girl had fallen off a changing table, but Fort Bragg Police Chief Scott Mayberry says he later admitted that he had shaken and slapped her.

The child died Dec. 5 in Children's Hospital in Oakland, where she had been flown to for treatment.

Tubbs and his wife had cared for the little girl since Oct. 23 at their Fort Bragg home. He was being held on $500,000 bail at the Mendocino County Jail.
