SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — There are new developments in the criminal cases against two Northern California women whose young daughters were suffocated in separate incidents.

Tiffany Lopez of Oakland was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Tuesday for the 2010 slaying of her toddler, 2-year-old Kamilah Russell. The sentence was part of a pea deal with prosecutors reached when the 22-year-old Lopez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

She told investigators she put her hand over the girl's nose and mouth because she was frustrated with Kamilah's crying.

In Santa Cruz on Tuesday, an October trial date was set for Veva Virgil, a 41-year-old woman who has pleaded not guilty by reason for insanity in the 2008 smothering death of her daughter, 3-year-old Isabella Martinez.

Virgil was arrested after she went to a hospital and reported she had sent her baby to heaven.
