CHINO HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Investigators say an off-duty police officer confronted after a Southern California freeway road rage incident opened fire and wounded two men.

One of the wounded men is hospitalized.

The name of the Huntington Park officer hasn't been released.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies answering a shots-fired call Thursday evening found the men in the parking lot at The Shoppes in Chino Hills.

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin says the off-duty officer was driving on State Route 71 when there was a road rage incident involving a car containing four men.

Both cars stopped in the mall parking lot.

Investigators say the off-duty officer fired after seeing objects in the hands of two men approaching his car.

Pepper spray and a knife were found at the scene.
