MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says a police officer was shot in a confrontation with several armed suspects but is expected to survive.

The department said in a statement that the officer was one of many answering an assault with a deadly weapons call in Moreno Valley on Tuesday afternoon when he was shot and is being treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Police and deputies including a SWAT team were trying to take the suspects into custody and to extract another person from the scene near State Route 60.
