ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Federal land managers in northern Nevada say a Houston-based energy company will have to alter its plans to do oil exploration in Elko County to minimize the visual impacts on the nearby California Trail.

Noble Energy Inc. has proposed nearly three dozen drilling sites that border the historic pioneer trail near Mary's River, Starr Valley and Jiggs.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports (http://tinyurl.com/kpya52h) that the Bureau of Land Management has determined that 22 of the 33 drill sites would have an adverse visual impact on the view from the trail.

However, BLM District Manager Jill Silvey says all but six of those likely can be altered to reduce the impact by painting equipment to blend into the landscape or using lower profile drills.
