JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a pair of pit bulls mauled and badly injured an 84-year-old woman in Riverside County.

Animal Services spokesman John Welsh tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/WkawOP) the Thursday attack was "horrific" and the woman "almost left for dead."

She was getting her mail when the dogs, one male one female, escaped from a yard across the street and attacked her.

A neighbor scared off the dogs and the woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital.

The dogs were impounded and euthanized.

Owner Juan Ortiz says he never expected such a thing from his dogs, but he values human life more than theirs so he wouldn't try to justify their actions.

Welsh says criminal charges are unlikely but Ortiz was cited for license violations.
