LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say a suspicious item that prompted an alert and evacuation of a facility handling weapons-grade nuclear material in the Nevada desert was a plastic tube left near a security fence.
Nevada National Security Site officials said Wednesday that an all-clear was declared about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and no one was hurt evacuating the top-security nuclear Device Assembly Facility.
NNSS officials say the item had tape on the ends like a pipe bomb. They think it was a prop accidentally left from a previous security exercise.
The 1,360-square-mile Nevada National Security Site is used for experiments and safety training related to the nation's nuclear stockpile.
The area north of Las Vegas was known as the Nevada Test Site when it hosted more than 1,000 nuclear detonations from 1951 to 1992.
