VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Northern California authorities are on the lookout for suspects who have robbed the same convenience store twice by using an unusual tactic — loading the money onto prepaid gift cards.

Vallejo Police Lt. Herman Robinson said surveillance videos show the individuals know how to load cash onto the cards, which are untraceable, and so may have retail experience.

The suspects have robbed the same 7-Eleven twice in two weeks, Robinson told KTVU-TV.

He said in the most recent robbery on Feb. 8, one of the suspects took the clerk to a back room and while an accomplice at the register loaded $6,000 onto gift cards. The suspects took about $1,500 in a prior robbery on Feb. 2.

Robinson told the station this is the first time he has heard of thieves using this tactic.
