BRENTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a possible motive behind the drive-by shooting of four teenagers in Contra Costa County was the pair of Nike sneakers one of the boys was wearing and that the assailants took as a sign of gang affiliation.

The Contra Costa Times reported Tuesday that the teens were seriously wounded on Monday night when a car pulled up and a passenger asked about the boy's Nike Cortez's.

Brentwood Captain Tom Hansen says the boy told his inquisitor not to worry about it, and the man said something about the shoes being popular with gang members.

The car then made a U-turn in the street and at least five shots were fired from inside.

The injured boys are between the ages of 13 and 16. Hansen says investigators have no reason to think they have gang ties.
