VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California say officers shot and killed a man in a busy shopping center parking lot following a high-speed chase.

Vallejo Police Lt. Sid DeJesus said the two officers opened fire Wednesday afternoon when the suspect rammed his SUV into their patrol cars numerous times, and the SUV became locked under one patrol car's bumper.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name has not been released.

The Vallejo Times-Herald reports that the incident began when officers stopped the SUV because it had an expired registration.

DeJesus says the suspect sped off. The SUV reached speeds up to 90 miles-per-hour and hit call boxes on Interstate 80. It then entered the parking lot of a Mi Pueblo Food Center, where police say the suspect hit several cars before ramming police.
