SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Documents reviewed by a newspaper reveal police secretly recorded the jailhouse conversations of the Huntington Beach man charged with killing eight people in a Seal Beach salon.

The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/11y7tsy ) more than 100 hours of Scott Dekraai's conversations with an informant were captured by a device installed in the suspect's one-man cell.

In a pretrial motion, Deputy Public Defender Scott Sanders wants to know if the informant initiated the conversations or enticed Dekraai into talking about the shootings.

If so, Sanders says the recordings would be a violation of Dekraai's rights because they took place after he was represented by an attorney.

Assistant District Attorney Dan Wagner says he doesn't plan to call the informant as a witness, so the defense isn't entitled to more details.
