PACIFICA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a San Francisco Bay Area police SWAT team shot and killed a 34-year-old man after he stabbed an officer following a six-hour standoff.
The standoff at a home in Pacifica began around noon on Tuesday. Pacifica police Capt. Joe Spanheimer tells the San Francisco Chronicle police were called to the home by family members who said the man was acting strangely.
The man allegedly refused officers' commands and brandished an ax when they encountered him in the backyard. A standoff ensued.
A Daly City police SWAT team went in with flash-bang grenades more than six hours later. Police say the man stabbed one of the officers with a knife, prompting the SWAT team to open fire.
The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer's wound was not considered life-threatening.
