SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — More students than ever are applying for undergraduate admission at the University of California.

UC officials said Friday that the number of students applying to UC's nine undergraduate campuses rose 8.6 percent to 174,767. That includes freshman and transfer applicants applying for fall 2013.

The increase was partly driven by a surge of applications from outside California.

The number of freshman applications from domestic non-residents rose 14.9 percent to 21,970, while the number of international applicants jumped 34.5 percent to 18,659.

The number of California students who applied for freshman admission rose 6.2 percent to 99,129.

For the first time, Latinos are the largest group of California students applying for freshman admission, rising to 32.1 percent of that pool.

The number of transfer applicants from California community colleges fell slightly.
