LAS VEGAS (AP) — The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is expected to have a new acting president by the end of the day Friday.

The state Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on who should lead the school now that former president Neal Smatresk has taken the top job at the University of North Texas.

State Chancellor Dan Klaich has recommended retired Boyd Gaming Corp. president and academic officer Don Snyder for the post. Snyder is leading a project to bring a new stadium to campus.

He will assume the post if he gets a majority of votes from the 13 members on the board.

The acting president will likely serve for a short period of time until a permanent replacement is chosen. Acting presidents are not eligible for the permanent post.
