RENO, Nev. (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he expects Democrats to maintain control of Senate in the fall elections.

Reid cautioned that things could change, and acknowledged he's concerned about holding an open seat in South Dakota where longtime Democrat Tim Johnson is stepping down.

But the Nevada Democrat told the Reno Gazette-Journal before a speech to the Washoe County Democratic Party on Sunday that if the election were held today, he is confident his party would retain the majority.

In his speech, Reid praised President Obama's handling of the crisis in Iraq. He says he opposes moving ground troops into Iraq but believes the airstrikes Obama has ordered are essential to weakening the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
