RENO, Nev. (MyNews4.com & KRNV) -- The popular ridesharing service Uber has been placing ads on Facebook looking for potential drivers in the Lake Tahoe area, and News 4 has confirmed that the transportation network company out of San Francisco is scoping the Lake Tahoe market.

According to an Uber spokesperson, the company has been receiving requests for months about bringing Uber to Lake Tahoe and they are, "excited about the Lake Tahoe Market and look forward to exploring opportunities in the future."

Uber allows users to hail a cab and pay for services rendered through a smartphone app. Drivers tend to be residents who use their own cars to pick up passengers as a part-time job.

Las Vegas taxi cab unions have protested after the company posted ads online to recruit drivers in southern Nevada. Cab drivers in cities like New York and San Francisco are also struggling as a result of the service.

Uber has not said where exactly they are looking to operate in the Lake Tahoe area, or when services will begin.

Yo! highTech way to sit in traffic, stuck, just like in 'Frisco'. Lake Tahoe area has worked hard to get public transit & try to reduce impacts to the Basin, snobby ("uber" alles) under-the-table 'service' just thumbs it's nose & sez: 'stay in yer car, there's plenty of room'. NOT
