SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A city audit concludes the San Francisco Fire Department should overhaul its promotional exam process to avoid errors like those that led to a lawsuit against the city.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the audit released Monday finds many errors result from the department's practice of having a committee develop the test's answer key even as the exam is being given.
Last year a jury awarded 15 current and retired firefighters a total of $3.7 million in back pay and damages. Their lawsuit claimed the 2008 promotional lieutenant exam was filled with errors that ultimately discriminated against candidates based on their age.
Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White has defended the exam.
The audit was performed by the city administrator's office at the request of Supervisor Malia Cohen.
