SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police say officers shot and wounded a suicidal man who pointed a gun at them in a park.

U-T San Diego reports the man told dispatchers Wednesday that he had a weapon and wanted to commit suicide by cop.

As officers tried to talk him into giving himself up he started walking toward them in Mission Bay's De Anza Cove Park. But he returned to his car and stepped out again clutching a handgun.

Capt. Al Guaderrama says at least one officer shot the man when he pointed the weapon at several officers and a police helicopter.

Police say the man was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

His name has not been released.
