SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Santa Barbara County's Main Jail is locked down after a disturbance among inmates in its exercise yard.

Chief Don Patterson of the Sheriff's Department's Custody Operations Division says the incident broke out around 11 a.m. Friday and involved about 36 inmates.

Deputies quelled the disturbance and one inmate was taken to a hospital for treatment of an injury described as non-life-threatening. Five other inmates were treated by jail staff for minor injuries. No members of the jail staff were injured.

Patterson says the jail will remain on lockdown while the cause of the disturbance is investigated. The lockdown is expected to continue into the weekend, interrupting or possibly canceling prisoner visits.

The department's website says the jail's daily population averages more than 640 inmates.
