SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick says two Sparks police officers were justified when they fatally shot a woman they believed was suicidal when she pointed a gun at them outside her home last fall.

Officers Mike Keating and Ryan Simpson said 45-year-old Monica Ritchey had already fired the gun and was pointing it at her head when they responded to her daughter's report she was suicidal.

Sparks Police Chief Brian Allen said Thursday that Gammick's review determined the officers were justified and feared for their safety when they shot Ritchey multiple times on Oct. 13 at the east-side home near Dunn Elementary School.

Allen also disclosed for the first time that Ritchey's daughter, Darcie Latham, was shot in the leg by police, not by her mother, as originally reported.
