LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters have rescued a 16-year-old boy after he nearly drowned in a pool at a Los Angeles high school that was closed because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city Fire Department, said firefighters arrived at West Adams Preparatory High School shortly before 3 p.m. Monday. They were met by a teen who was outside the closed school, saying his friend needed help.

Firefighters used a power saw to force entry, jumped a tall fence that surrounded the pool, and began to give medical aid to the 16-year-old boy. The teen was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.

It wasn't known if any of the teens were students at the school.
