LAS VEGAS (AP) — Students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas are trying their hand at inventing the next hot casino game, getting it patented and selling it to casino companies.

More than a dozen student ideas refined through the school's Gaming Innovation class are working their way through the patent process.

UNLV officials say the first class was offered last fall, and has flourished this spring under the guidance of former SHFL Entertainment CEO Mark Yoseloff. Other gambling industry leaders have served as mentors and guest lecturers in the course.

The university is planning to build on the success of the program by launching a Center for Gaming Innovation this fall. It's supported by the state's Knowledge Fund, which promotes research in sectors Nevada has targeted for economic growth.
