LOS ANGELES (AP) — President Barack Obama has nominated a U.S. attorney from Southern California to become a federal district judge.
Andre Birotte (Behr-rot) Jr. has been the Justice Department's top attorney in Los Angeles and six neighboring counties since 2010.
Obama says in a statement that Birotte has demonstrated the expertise and fair-mindedness Americans expect from the judicial system.
He was recommended for the job by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who says Birotte has a record of excellence and fairness.
The nomination for the central district of California seat must be approved in the Senate, where Republicans last month blocked dozens of Obama's nominations form immediate approval.
