COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a Southern California woman who lived in packrat-like conditions has died in a house fire.
The Orange County Register says the woman, who was in her 70s, died at the scene Tuesday morning in Costa Mesa.
Firefighters called to the scene found heavy smoke coming from the home and were told someone was inside.
Deputy Fire Chief Fred Seguin says firefighters tried to get inside but the sheer amount of stuff in the home slowed their search.
They finally found the woman on a bedroom floor.
It took about a half-hour to knock down the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
