SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) — Four people are dead and a fifth critically injured after a car collided with a tree in an early-morning accident and split in half in San Clemente.
Orange County sheriff's Lt. Steve Gil said Saturday that three females and one male were ejected from the late model BMW and were pronounced dead at the scene.
A fifth passenger, a female, was not ejected and was expected to survive after being airlifted to a local hospital.
Gil says the investigation continues, but speed and alcohol both played a role in the crash.
The names and ages of the dead have not yet been released.
The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m.
It's still not known if they four who were ejected were wearing seatbelts.
