SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say two Mexican men have been found dead inside a trunk at a San Diego border crossing, in what authorities believe was a smuggling attempt.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection say the 28- and 20-year-old men appeared to be unconscious and not breathing when inspectors opened the trunk of a 2012 Dodge Challenger Tuesday afternoon at the San Ysidro port of entry. The agency said the men were pronounced dead at nearby hospitals.

Hundreds of migrants perish each year after entering the country illegally to trek through Arizona deserts and Texas ranches. However, it is extremely rare for someone to die being smuggled inside a vehicle.

The driver — a 41-year-old, U.S. citizen who was not named — was taken into custody.
