MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — Police in Central California say three 16-year-olds died when the stolen vehicle they were riding in hit a tree.

The 2009 Nissan Altima crashed in front of a Modesto home and caught fire around 11:43 p.m. Thursday, minutes after a police officer spotted it and briefly gave chase.

Modesto police say the officer thought the car was being driven too dangerously and stopped the pursuit after about a minute or so. The officer lost sight of the vehicle before coming upon the crash scene.

The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The two male passengers died at hospitals.

Police say the car had been reported stolen earlier in the night.
