HYDESVILLE, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol says four people died when the pickup truck they were in veered off a road and slammed head-on into a tree in Humboldt County.

The crash on State Route 36 near Hydesville occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. CHP Officer Matt Harvey says most of the 2002 Dodge Dakota's eight occupants were unrestrained in the truck's rear bed.

Four of them — a 13-year-old girl, two women and a man — were pronounced dead at the scene. The other four suffered major injuries.

Harvey said the occupants included some members of the same family. They appeared to be coming from a camping trip or some other type of outing.

Their names have not been released.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.
