FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Fire crews are battling to contain a five-alarm blaze that has destroyed at least 2 homes in the Northern California town of Fairfield.

The brush fire spread to homes and prompted evacuations Friday afternoon, sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air.

The California Highway Patrol said the fire caused traffic delays on westbound Interstate 680. Motorists were being advised to use Interstates 780 and 80 instead.

KTVU reports that it wasn't yet known how many homes had been destroyed.
