RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Five people from Northern California accused of kidnapping an 18-year-old girl in Compton to force her into prostitution have been charged with human trafficking and attempted pimping.
Four men and a woman from San Jose and Gilroy pleaded not guilty in Riverside County Superior Court on Wednesday.
Authorities said the girl was taken to a Moreno Valley motel last week for the purpose of prostitution, but she managed to get away and sought help from the motel staff. Sheriff's deputies swarmed in and arrested the suspects.
The four men faced additional charges of kidnap for the purpose of rape; two of them were also charged with sexually assaulting the victim. The men each face potential life sentences.
The woman suspect faces 20 years in prison if convicted.
