POMONA, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County authorities say a freeway pileup in Pomona involving a big-rig has injured six people, three of them critically, and jammed traffic for miles.

The truck jackknifed in southbound lanes of State Route 71 at around 9 a.m. Wednesday. TV reports showed at least three other cars involved, including an SUV that smashed into a fence off the freeway shoulder.

County fire officials say three people were trapped in wrecks and had to be freed. A total of six people were hurt, three critically, and two had to be airlifted by helicopter from the scene.

The crash shut down lanes and backed up traffic in the area about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
