WASHINGTON (AP) — Luck has run out for Las Vegas' push to bring the Republican Party's next presidential nominating convention to Sin City.
A senior official involved in the convention bid says Las Vegas has formally withdrawn its bid. The official insists on anonymity because the Republican National Committee wants to announce the decision.
RNC officials did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
Las Vegas was thought to be a leader in the competition to win the GOP's presidential nomination convention in 2016. Some Republicans worried that its reputation for excess could overshadow the event. Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson has been a driving force behind the city's bid.
Other potential sites include Dallas, Kansas City and a handful of cities in Ohio.
