SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — A student at a Sparks middle school opened fire on campus this morning, wounding two boys and killing a teacher who was trying to protect other children.

Police say 20 to 30 students witnessed the shooting.

The suspected gunman also was dead, but it's unclear whether the student committed suicide. Authorities say no shots were fired by law enforcement.

Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said the teacher who was killed was trying to protect other students.

Family members identified him as math teacher Michael Landsberry, a 45-year-old military veteran who leaves behind a wife and two stepdaughters

The names of the suspect and two other victims have not yet been released, and the motive for the shooting is still unknown.

Sparks Mayor Geno Martini called the shooting "an isolated incident."
